The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), which plans to set up a tidal energy plant at the confluence of the Thane creek and Ulhas river in India, has teamed up with South Korean company Korea Water Resources Corporation (K water) to develop the project, according to The Times of India .
On 23 August, K water’s Manager Bong-Keun Oh and Energy Director Hong Jeong Jo, accompanied by Arvind Shaligram, Head of the Electronic Science Department at Pune’s Savitribai Phule University, paid a visit to the proposed project’s site at the Kasheli bridge.
The chosen location could provide “an ideal set up”, since the height difference between high tide mark and low tide mark at Kasheli was close to 5 meters. “However, this was just the preliminary survey. We have to study the area in detail to check whether this project can sustain. If that succeeds, we will manufacture the turbines which when placed under water will help convert the mechanical energy into electricity,” the news site quotes Shaligram as saying.
The proposed tidal energy plant could generate up to 8MW and be capable of supplying around 8,000 households with clean energy.
TMC revealed the plans for the tidal energy project this June , when it announced that it has prepared a proposal to obtain the approval from the authorities.
