Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd and Boskalis-Middle East recently won a multi-million dredging contract for the New Port Project (NPP) project in Doha, Qatar.
The contract, awarded by the NPP steering committee in August, includes quay walls, channel dredging works, and construction of 4km long breakwater at the Economic Zone 3(QEZ3).
According to Abdul Aziz Mohammed al-Nuaimi, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority and head of the New Port Project Steering Committee, construction works on the NPP are fast progressing, with 30% of the overall work already completed.
“ The new port is included in the strategic plan of the State of Qatar and is a part of the 2030 vision ,” said Abdul Aziz Mohammed al-Nuaimi. “ When completed, the port will be able to absorb future growth in Qatar, reaching the capacity of 2 million containers per year with possible expansion in the future to 6 million containers per year. ”
Strategically located south of Doha, the $7.4 billion megaproject, which includes a new port, a new base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3, will span a 26.5 square kilometer area.
The Qatar Economic Zone 3 (QEZ3), a self-contained development with industrial and residential facilities, will be located adjacent to the New Port.
As an essential element of Qatar’s development goals and objectives, the QEZ3 will be an important gateway into Qatar, providing an economic hub around the port for manufacturing, logistics and trade across a number of industrial sectors and in turn fostering import and export synergy.
