Classification society Bureau Veritas informed it has been selected to class the conversion of Wessels Reederei’s 1,036 TEU container vessel Wes Amelie to run on liquefied natural gas.
Wessels Reederei partnered up with MAN Diesel & Turbo, TGE Marine Gas Engineering, SMB Naval Architects & Consultants and Bureau Veritas on the conversion project supported by the German ministry of transport.
BV informed in its statement on Tuesday that MAN D&T will convert the existing engine to a 51/60 DF dual-fuel engine, and an LNG tank of approximately 500 cubic meters will be added to the fore part of the vessel to limit the loss of cargo capacity.
Tecnitas, the consulting arm of Bureau Veritas, is carrying out risk analyses for the new LNG as fuel system and operations like LNG bunkering.
Following the completion of the first containership LNG fuel conversion, scheduled for 2017, the Wes Amelie will meet Tier III of Marpol Annex 6 regulation, Bureau Veritas said.
