The Hobson Bay City Council has just started annual dredging and maintenance of Altona Safe Harbor.

The project, aimed to ensure a safe depth for boats, involves a section of the intertidal zone of the Seaholme Foreshore.

According to the city council, it will take approximately five to six weeks to complete the project, beach and weather conditions permitting.

Dredging will be undertaken by a vessel-mounted cutter suction pump. Dredged material will be disposed along Seaholme foreshore the Altona Dog Beach.

The first phase of the project includes dredged sediment being pumped into a storage bund on the beach at PA Burns Reserve. After that, the sediment will drain off, returning to the usual sandy color.

Last phase involves redistribution of the new sand along the Dog Beach, one of the best dog beaches in Melbourne.
