BioPower Systems (BPS), an Australian wave energy developer, has identified a damage on the cable that links its bioWAVE wave energy device to the onshore grid.
The damage was identified during the commissioning activities of its bioWAVE unit, deployed off Port Fairy, Australia, in December 2015, and BPS is currently preparing to replace a section of the cable so that commissioning activities can continue, the company informed.
“A substantial delay has occurred due to damage of the subsea cable. BPS is currently working to rectify the cable, and then to complete the commissioning,” BPS said.
Regular operation and testing, with electricity supply to grid, will commence after commissioning is completed, according to BPS.
bioWAVE is a 26 meters tall oscillating structure designed to sway back-and-forth beneath the ocean swell. This oscillating motion activates opposing hydraulic cylinders, and the pressurised hydraulic fluid spins a 250kW generator to produce electricity.
