South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries on Monday said it has delivered a 176,000-cbm LNG carrier to Norwegian shipping company Knutsen.

The LNG tanker named La Mancha Knutsen is equipped with Hyundai Heavy’s newly developed gas treatment system.

The system includes an M-type, electronically controlled, gas injection (MEGI) engine, a boil-off gas (BOG) high-pressure compressor, a BOG re-liquefaction system, an LNG fuel gas supply system and Hyundai integrated gas supply system (Hi-GAS).

The new gas treatment system can re-liquefy 100 percent of the BOG and re-store it in the LNG tank which can later be used as the ship’s fuel, whereas the conventional systems can only re-liquefy BOG partially, Hyundai Heavy said in its statement.

According to HHI, the gas treatment system is expected to save $1 million in fuel costs each year or up to $25 million in total, considering that vessels are used for an average of 25 years.
