Oceantec Energías Marinas has deployed its wave energy device, dubbed Marmok-A5, off the north coast of Spain at Bimep testing site.
The deployment of the Marmok-A5 wave energy device at Bimep site, located 1.7 km off Armintza, was conducted yesterday following the transport of the device along Bilbao estuary from the Navacel premises.
The deployment is part of EU-funded OPERA project, and according to the project website, the commissioning activities for the device will begin today, October 13.
Marmok-A5 device is a point absorber oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy device whose generating system comprises two turbines located in the upper part of the device with a rated capacity of 30kW.
The device generates power when the waves cause water column to rise and fall, compressing and decompressing the air above, which spins the turbines to drive an electricity generator.
The design and manufacture of the full scale device will begin following the conclusion of testing activities on this low power prototype, according to OPERA.
Project OPERA (Open Sea Wave Operating Experience to Reduce Energy Cost), coordinated by Tecnalia and Ente Vasco de la Energía (EVE), involves the consortium of 12 members working together to halve the cost of wave energy.
