Caterpillar Marine dual fuel engines have been ordered for four new cruise ships currently under construction at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg (Germany) and Turku (Finland) shipyards.
MaK16 M 46 DF dual fuel engines and the full LNG supply and handling system has ben ordered for the four vessels, Caterpillar Marine said in its statement.
The company noted that it’s research and development department at the Rostock facility started the MaK M 46 DF engine by using LNG from the very beginning, avoiding diesel engine specific emissions.
Frank Starke , managing director of Caterpillar Motoren, said, “this development is a key consideration for cruise operators who wish to use LNG, rather than risk smoke from the funnel or soot on deck, whilst starting main engines and maneuvering in port waters.”
Meyer Werft has secured orders with Carnival Cruises for a number of LNG-fueled cruise ships for its cruise brands.
In total, Carnival Cruises has agreements in place to build seven LNG-powered cruise ships across four of its 10 global cruise brands in coming years.
Most recently, the Meyer Turku shipyard also secured an order for two LNG-fueled cruise ships for Royal Caribbean Cruises.
