International crew to test at Morlais tidal demo zone
Eight tidal energy developers have secured access to berths from Menter Môn, the third-party manager for the Morlais tidal energy project off the coast of Anglesey, Wales, including OpenHydro, Tocardo Tidal Turbines, Aquantis, Verdant Isles, TidalStream, Instream Energy Systems, Nova Innovation, and Kepler Energy.
Nova Scotia, France team up for tidal research
The Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia and France Energies Marines have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on research projects to improve technologies and applications for tidal energy in the Bay of Fundy and off the coast of France. It focuses on areas better understanding of environmental and socio-economic conditions for marine renewable energy development.
Final preparations for Cape Sharp Tidal deployment underway
Cape Sharp Tidal is making final preparations for the deployment of one OpenHydro tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy before the end of 2016. Pending favorable weather conditions for deployment and cable connections, the marine activities related to the deployment of the first 2MW tidal turbine will begin next week, according to Cape Sharp Tidal.
Minesto’s kite ‘flies’ higher
Minesto has revealed that the results of quarter-scale sea trials of its Deep Green tidal technology correspond to full power production for a full-scale power plant. The quarter-scale model generated an output of more than 3kW at a tidal current velocity of 0.8 m/s, which corresponds to full power production for a full-scale 0.5MW power plant at 1.75 m/s current velocity.
Sea Power WEC goes out to sea
Sea Power, an Ireland-based wave energy developer, has towed out its wave energy device from Foynes Harbour into the Galway Bay, Ireland. The towing operation was conducted by Atlantic Towage last week, following the successful mooring installation at the SmartBay site. The WEC was subsequently hooked up to the set of pre-deployed moorings lines, and data logging has commenced.
