Former trend of shipping liquefied natural gas cargoes from Peru to Mexico has changed significantly following the inauguration of the expanded Panama Canal.

The liquefaction and export facility at Pampa Melchorita shipped its third cargo of November aboard Teekay’s 145,500-cbm LNG carrier Hispania Spirit on November 12.

According to the data released by the state-owned Perupetro, like the previous two November cargoes, the Hispania Spirit is heading for an LNG terminal in Spain.

Combined with the two late October cargoes this was the fifth vessel on the trot to be dispatched to Spain.

With the latest cargo, Peru’s LNG export facility shipped 364 vessels in total, since it started operations in June 2010.

The 4.45 million tons per year gas liquefaction plant is located 170 kilometers south of Lima and receives gas via a 408-kilometer pipeline built across the Andes.
