Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) has welcomed a new board director, and a new board chair to its team.

Janet MacMillan has been named as the new board chair, while Robert Fournier will be taking the position of an independent board director, FORCE informed.

MacMillan worked with many of Nova Scotia’s renewable energy and infrastructure projects, providing counsel to colleagues and clients at NATIONAL Public Relations in areas including citizen engagement, risk management, governance and regulatory matters, according to FORCE.

Robert Fournier is professor of oceanography at Dalhousie University, where he was the former associate vice-president of research, and most recently worked in its marine affairs program (MAP), which specializes in marine policy.

MacMillan said: “FORCE has an important role to play both here at home, and on the world stage. Meeting the challenge of ‘the Fundy standard’ means attracting the world’s best technologies, and working with scientists, regulators and the public to demonstrate we can safely generate clean, renewable energy from the world’s highest tides – all of which contributes to Nova Scotia’s environmental and economic well-being.”

Tony Wright , General Manager at FORCE, said: “As we build on the success of this month’s successful turbine deployment, we are moving into an important period of demonstration and learning. With that in mind, we’re very fortunate to draw upon MacMillan’s governance experience, expertise, and intelligence. She’s been a tremendous asset for the last three years. And we’re deeply honored to add Fournier’s ocean science expertise: he is a strong voice for responsible ocean management.”

FORCE is Canada’s lead test facility for in-stream tidal energy technology, located in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia.
