Port of Brisbane has welcomed its first 8500 class vessel, marking a significant milestone in the port’s ongoing work to optimize its navigational channel and ensure Brisbane was able to safely handle the larger container vessels and bulk carriers of the future.
“ As vessels increase in size and demand grows for Australian ports to take these larger vessels, ” said Roy Cummins, Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) CEO . “ The arrival of the Lloyd Don Carlos has provided real-time information to help us calibrate the future requirements of Port of Brisbane’s navigational channel.”
PBPL maintains 90km of navigational shipping channel that stretches from the northern tip of Bribie Island across Moreton Bay into the Brisbane River.
This year was a busy one for PBPL’s dredging team who completed a number of external contracts alongside their regular maintenance dredging programs.
PBPL’s TSHD Brisbane, the largest dredger of its type based in Australia, was busy for the first few months of the year undertaking maintenance dredging at the port and minor development work following its annual northern dredging campaign in ports including Bundaberg, Gladstone, Townsville, Cairns, and Weipa.
