Video: PLOCAN platform anchors off Canary Islands

A technological consortium, led by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Economy, has anchored the PLOCAN offshore platform to the seabed off Canary Islands, Spain.

A technological consortium, led by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Economy, has anchored the PLOCAN offshore platform to the seabed off Canary Islands, Spain.

The platform was anchored yesterday, November 30, at the location 2.5 kilometers off the coast of Gran Canaria, Spanish media report.

It is a 32,000-tonne floating structure that will house various laboratories and test benches to advance the research related to marine sciences, and also to offshore renewable energies.

The structure is anchored to the seabed at the depth of 30.5 meters, off Jinámar. It is accessible both by sea and air, and will have the capacity to host around 40 scientists.

PLOCAN (Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands) is a research facility co-funded by the Spanish and Canary Islands governments with the aim of supporting the research and development in the fields of ocean science and technology.
