Norway’s Siem Offshore has taken the delivery of a newbuild LNG-powered platform supply vessel to be deployed in Australia where it will service LNG player Woodside.
According to Woodside, this will be Australia’s first LNG-powered marine support vessel.
The PSV Siem Thiima, previously named Siem Harmony, was delivered from Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, Poland on November 24, Siem Offshore said in a statement.
The vessel is equipped with dual-fuel propulsion allowing it to operate on LNG as well as on marine gas oil (MGO). This is Siem Offshore’s third vessel to utilise the Wärtsilä VS 4411 DF ship design – the two other ships are Siem Symphony and Siem Pride.
The Siem Thiima is preparing for a long journey to Port Dampier, Western Australia where it will operate as part of the Woodside fleet under a five-year charter deal signed earlier this year, Siem Offshore noted in the statement. The PSV is expected to be delivered to Woodside in the first quarter of 2017.
Worth mentioning, Woodside’s boss Peter Coleman said recently at an event in Tokyo that there is a huge potential in the LNG-fueling market.
Announcing that Woodside is about to launch its first LNG-fueled supply vessel in Western Australia, he said it is “timely to ask ourselves what would happen if the entire global shipping fleet converted to lower-emission LNG?”
This market alone could account for more than 200 million mt/year of demand, according to Coleman.
