Finland-based wave energy developer, Wello, has unveiled plans to deploy its Penguin wave energy device at Wave Hub site at the end of December.
The device will be ready for deployment end of December, Wello said, adding that the marine operations will be carried out by Green Marine.
Heikki Paakkinen , CEO of Wello, said: “We are fully confident that deployment will be successful despite of the demanding winter season.”
The deployment is part of the EU-funded Clean Energy from Ocean Waves (CEFOW) project that aims to demonstrate the viability of floating wave energy converters on a larger scale, and longer period of time.
In addition to Wello, the joint project involves the consortium consisting of Fortum, Mojo Maritime, Wave Hub, Green Marine, Uppsala University, Plymouth University and the University of Exeter.
The project is scheduled to last for 5 years with the budget of €24.7 million, and a goal of deploying three 1MW Penguin wave energy devices.
Note: Following the application of the CEFOW consortium, and its subsequent approval by EU on December 15, 2016, it was decided that the tests on the Penguin wave energy device will be conducted at the European Marine Energy Centre, rather than at Wave Hub, starting early in 2017.
