Orion Marine Group is about to complete the dredging of the Bayport Ship Channel, according to the Port of Houston.
The Bayport Channel is being dredged to match the current 45 feet depth of the Houston Ship Channel.
With the Barbours Cut dredging completed nearly a year ago, completion of the Bayport Channel works is expected in the next couple of weeks.
The channel deepening and widening improvements on the Bayport and Barbours Cut are a major component of the port’s overall development program, which will allow the Port of Houston to service the next generation of larger container vessels being deployed on all trade lanes.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – being responsible for dredging of the Houston Ship Channel while the Port Houston is responsible for its berths and other public facilities – is currently conducting a feasibility study for potential improvements to the Houston Ship Channel.
The study encompasses evaluating selective widening and deepening of the federal channel, construction or rehabilitation of turning basins, construction of a harbor of refuge or mid-bay anchorage basin, rehabilitation of existing turns and other safety related features.
The congressionally authorized study, which started with the signing of a cost share agreement in November 2015, is expected to be completed at the end of 2019.
