Construction of the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable has been completed, SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium informed.
The cable connects Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Italy and France.
“The completion of the SEA-ME-WE 5 project is a landmark system upgrade for all data users worldwide. This system facilitates a new age of digital transformation and innovation, catalyzing greater economic activities, trade and growth across three continents,” Linette Lee , SEA-ME-WE-5 consortium management committee chair was quoted as saying.
The SEA-ME-WE 5 is designed with the upgradable 100Gbps technology, enabling an initial system capacity of 24Tbps per second on 3 fibre pairs.
The cable construction was undertaken by Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks. The company secured the contract to build the 20.000 km cable in 2014.
