The shore protection work for the Hulhumalé Phase II islands is now 96 percent complete, according to the Maldives Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The protection work includes construction of armor rock revetment and sand haulage of Hulhumalé Phase II offshore islands (Yacht Marina and Cruise Terminal).
HDC also reported that excavation and sub-grade work of the first and second layer of the road network in Phase II is now complete in Zone 1,2, and 3.
Currently, work is being carried out to install service crossings, which include sewer, water, electricity and telephone.
DEME’s Dredging International started the land reclamation works for the Hulhumalé Phase II back in 2014, adding approximately 240 ha to the island.
For the project, the contractor pumped ashore around 6 million m³ of sand that was borrowed from the ocean floor by a suction hopper dredger.
When fully completed, the Hulhumalé Phase II project will bring residential development, a business district, a light industrial park, a marina and cruise terminal, a knowledge and technology park and a heritage and tourism district. It will accommodate about 100,000 people.
