Tidal Energy Today has made a list of the most viewed videos in 2016 that showcase some of the interesting tidal and wave energy projects.
OpenHydro tidal turbine vs fish
The video shows an earlier OpenHydro prototype moving slowly at about 6-8 RPM deployed at EMEC in Scotland, while the shoaling fish move away from the turbine as the tidal speed increases. In more than ten years of monitoring, there hasn’t been a single recorded incident of fish, mammal or sea bird collision with in-stream tidal turbines, according to Cape Sharp Tidal.
SWEL’s wave energy device tackles Cypriot waves
Sea Wave Energy Limited (SWEL) released a video showing the open sea testing of its wave energy device, known as the Waveline Magnet 9.1 (wM9.1), conducted over the summer in Cyprus.
SR2000 installation at EMEC
The video shows the installation of Scotrenewables Tidal Power’s SR2000 floating tidal energy device that was conducted in October at EMEC’s grid-connected tidal testing site at the Fall of Warness, Orkney.
Cape Sharp Tidal turbine deployment
A joint venture created by OpenHydro and Emera, Cape Sharp Tidal, installed the first out of two 2MW OpenHydro turbines planned for the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) site, in Nova Scotia, Canada, in November. The turbine was submerged to the sea floor in a 4-hour long operation, which can be viewed in a video below.
Tidal turbine produces first power off Shetland
The energy produced from the first tidal turbine from the Shetland Tidal Array project has been exported to the grid early in March, 2016. The first Nova M100 turbine of the array delivered power to the Shetland grid following a winter of operations and testing.
