The Government of Spain has revealed plans to open a 3GW tender for renewable energy projects in the first quarter of 2017.

Spanish government has submitted a proposal to the country’s regulator CNMC for the competitive tender under which 3GW of new renewable energy projects are planned to be added to Spanish electricity system by 2020.

The government plans to allocate 1.4GW for wind, 1.4GW for photovoltaic, and 200MW for other renewable energy projects, under a €176 million tender for which the exact date will be revealed later, it is stated in the Spanish energy ministry’s proposal.

The new projects will have to be executed before December 31, 2019, according to the Spanish government, to help the country achieve the target of 20% of renewable energy by 2020.

Spain is currently on track to meet this objective, having reached 17.3% of renewable energy generation in 2014, compared to the expected 12.1%, Spanish government said.

A public consultation regarding the proposal has been launched by CNMC (National Authority for Markets and Competition of Spain), which will run until January 20, 2017.
