ACE Winches, a deck machinery specialist, informed it has been awarded a spooling contract for Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas project from Oceaneering.
According to the company’s statement, the contract is the first time ACE Winches’ newly developed 500te reel drive system is used.
It has been developed for high tension spooling and the deployment and recovery of subsea products such as umbilicals, risers and flow lines, flexible pipelines, power cables, telecommunication cables, tubing, wire ropes and mooring lines, capable of accommodating a gross weight of 500te.
The scope of work will see ACE Winches spool 4400m of umbilical, with a diameter of 229mm on to a 12.2m reel. The weight of the umbilical is the heaviest Oceaneering has ever spooled with a total weight of 426te.
With 488m in length and 74m in width, Shell’s Prelude FLNG is the largest facility of its kind.
Once completed at SHI’s Geoje shipyard, the FLNG facility will be towed to the Prelude gas field offshore Western Australia.
The FLNG is expected to stay moored at the Prelude gas field for 25 years, and is expected to produce 3.6 mtpa of LNG, 1.3 mtpa of condensate and 0.4 mtpa of LPG for export.
