Spanish shipping company Baleària has ordered two LNG-fueled ferries at the Italian shipbuilder Cantiere Navale Visentini.
The order comes less than a year after Baleària had ordered an LNG-powered ferry at the Spanish shipyard LaNaval.
The latest order includes two dual-fuel gas engine sister ferries, measuring 186.5 meters in length and a capacity for 810 people.
The order is worth around 200 million euros, and the LNG-fueled vessels are expected to be operational by the end of 2018, Baleària said on Wednesday.
According to Baleària, the ships will be able to reach a speed of 24 knots due to the dual-fuel engines that will have a total power of 20,600 KW.
The use of LNG as fuel reduces CO2 and NOx emissions by more than 40% while at the same time eliminates harmful emissions of sulfur and other particles, Baleària noted in the statement.
