Penguin wave energy device has reached Orkney ahead of scheduled deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

Wello’s device was towed from Cornwall, reaching Kirkwall in Orkney on Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

The tow went well despite few days’ delay due to bad weather, according to the Finnish wave energy developer.

The device will be deployed shortly at EMEC where the preparations are ongoing as part of the CEFOW project.

Timo Lotti from Wello said: “Two weeks ago the sea cable was already prepared for connection and mooring laying is due to begin as weather allows.”

Following the deployment at EMEC, the construction of the new Wello device will begin before this summer, Wello informed.

The details of the device are being fine tuned, with the verification tank tests underway this week.

Clean Energy from Ocean Waves (CEFOW) project was launched in 2015, with the backing of €17 million from the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, received in May the same year.
