Heavy equipment that will be used for the Willoughby Spit and Vicinity Storm Damage Reduction Project is set to arrive this Wednesday at 21st Bay View St, reports USACE.

According to the Corps, the project includes placing of 1.2 million cubic yards of sand, widening the beach to 60 feet and creating a berm 5 feet above mean low water along 7.3 miles of shoreline.

Once completed, the wider, higher beach will protect infrastructure, from the tip of Willoughby Spit near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to the federal navigation project at Little Creek Inlet, from wave attack and flooding during coastal storms.

The project, worth $34.5 million, is the largest single storm damage reduction project in the City of Norfolk.
