Rotterdam-based dredging specialist, Van Oord ordered an LNG-powered crane vessel at Neptune Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam.
The vessel, to be named Werkendam, will be Van Oord’s first LNG-powered vessel and will be deployed to Netherlands-based projects executed by the company’s unit Paans Van Oord.
After the construction, which is expected to take about twelve months, the vessel will be able to run on LNG and gas oil as backup.
It will feature a 38 cubic meters LNG tank on the aft of the deck. This will allow it to sail and operate for fourteen days without bunkering LNG, according to Van Oord.
Jaap de Jong , staff director of the ship management department at Van Oord noted that the company is turning to alternative fuels in an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint.
Werkndam will be 68.4 meters long with a hopper capacity of 700 cubic meters and a crane with a 25-ton lifting capacity at 16 meters.
