LNG carrier La Mancha Knutsen came under pirate attack in the Gulf of Guinea, off Nigeria’s Port Harcourt.
Citing a source in the ministry of defense, Spanish daily El Comercio, reported that at least seven armed men approached the 173,656-cbm LNG carrier opening fire on the tanker once it increased speed to avoid the pirates boarding the vessel.
The attack was abandoned after the pirates failed to board the vessel, which then headed to Bonny island, where it berthed for further investigation.
La Mancha Knutsen, delivered from the Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2016, had no security guards onboard, however, no material or physical damage was reported following the attack.
LNG World News contacted Knutsen, the operator of the LNG carrier, seeking confirmation of the attack. No response has been received by the time this article was published.
The LNG tanker is under a charter contract with Spanish LNG operator, Gas Natural Fenosa, until September 2036.
