James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) has been selected to provide project engineering services for the installation of GWave’s wave energy device at Wave Hub.

The work will be undertaken by JFMS’ Marine Projects division, previously Mojo Maritime, who will be on hand to assist in the delivery of the project set for 2018.

As reported earlier, the US-based wave energy developer GWave has last month revealed plans to deploy its 9MW power generation vessel at Cornish wave energy test site.

GWave and its partners are now conducting detailed tests of the mooring system at the COAST laboratory at Plymouth University, ahead of next year’s installation at Wave Hub.

Bob Colclough , JFMS’s Principal Naval Architect, said: “GWave’s commitment to the South West is a great testament to the strength and depth of supply chain. We hope this is the first of many developments off our shores, consolidating the UK’s position as world leaders in marine renewable energy. Wave Hub has been the birthplace for many innovative projects and will be a great testing ground for the device.”

GWave’s device floats on surface of the ocean and pitches with the swells as the waves pass underneath. Inside the device there are weighs which swing in counter motion to generate electricity.

JFMS, part of James Fisher and Sons, specializes in project management, engineering and consultancy services for the marine renewable energy industry.
