Bermuda Container Line signed a contract for the construction of a new LNG-ready container vessel to service the New York-Bermuda trade.

According to the company’s statement, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2019 and will replace the BCL’s current container vessel, Oleander which will be retired.

BCL has not disclosed the shipbuilder contracted for the job, or the value of the contract.

“It will be outfitted to carry dry and refrigerated containers, trucks, cars and other wheeled equipment, along with oversized project cargo,” said John Wight , chairman of the BCL board.

He added that the vessel will have the capability to convert to LNG operation, which is being regarded as “the game-changer for shipping in the future.”

BCL is owned by Neptune Group by Hamilton, Bermuda-based Neptune Group, and provides freight service from the port of New York to Bermuda.
