The governments of Scotland and California have signed a joint agreement to work together to tackle climate change.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and the Governor of California Edmund G. Brown signed the Under2 memorandum of understanding, setting the goal to cut greenhouse gases by 80% by 2050.

The officials discussed how the two administrations can work together to achieve the ambitions set out in the Under2 MoU.

They committed to support the efforts of other state, regional, and city signatories to tackle climate change by providing expert staff support to other jurisdictions.

Through the Under2MoU, Scotland and California will also share information and best practices with other signatories on how they have undertaken long-term, deep decarbonization planning.

Nicola Sturgeon said: “Scotland is making huge progress in delivering our climate change ambitions, but we are not complacent and there is still much to achieve. The meeting strengthened our relationship with the Government of California and I’m confident we can work together to achieve the targets set out by the Under2 MoU.”

The Under2 Coalition is a diverse group of governments around the world who set ambitious targets to combat climate change.
