Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. ( Boskalis ) has once again contracted SPT Offshore, this time for the detailed design and installation of suction pile foundations for Vattenfall’s 92.4MW Aberdeen offshore wind farm.

SPT Offshore will design and install 33 suction pile foundations for the foundation of eleven suction bucket jackets.

The jackets will support the world’s largest 8.4MW MHI Vestas wind turbines. The installation is planned for the second half of 2017.

The use of suction bucket jacket foundations in conjunction with the very large wind turbines and the use of high capacity 66kV power cables makes this project unique, SPT Offshore said.

Aberdeen offshore wind farm, also known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), is located some 3 kilometres off Aberdeen. Completion of the project is expected in the second quarter of 2018.

Apart from generating electricity, it will also be a centre for testing and developing new technologies for offshore wind power.

This is the second contract between Boskalis and SPT Offshore to be announced on Wednesday, 19 April.

As reported earlier, SPT Offshore will also install suction pile foundations on a part of DONG Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.
