The new government statistics has shown that 79% of UK public supports the use of tidal and wave energy technologies for electricity generation.

The poll has found that 79% of UK public has backed the use of renewable energy, with the support for other renewable technologies reaching their highest ever levels since the poll began in 2012, according to Renewable UK.

Onshore wind was supported by 73% of UK public, while the support for offshore wind reached 80%.

The support for wave and tidal stood at 79% in the latest public attitudes tracking survey published by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Emma Pinchbeck , RenewableUK’s Executive Director, said: “As political parties get ready to launch their manifestos, it must surely be worth their attention that nearly 80% of the general public support renewable energy, and this remains true across all demographics.

“The public is well aware that home-grown renewables provide clean and affordable energy for the future, along with huge economic benefits to local communities.”

The data was collected between March 29 – April 2, 2017, using face-to-face in-home interviews with a representative sample of 2,180 households in the UK.
