OTEC Cayman has reportedly completed the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the floating ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant off Cayman Islands.
OTEC Cayman expects to submit the EIA to the in the following weeks to start the permitting process with the Environmental Assessment Board (EAB) for the construction of the OTEC plant, the Cayman Compass reports.
“We are confident we have done everything that has been asked of us from a regulatory perspective. Hopefully, they will see it the same way and give us the green light,” Derek Dyson , Secretary for OTEC Cayman, said for local newspaper Cayman Compass.
The proposed power plant will be moored on the north side of Grand Cayman Island, and will initially provide up to 6.25MW of power. The project is planned for expansion to 25MW.
The plant could become operational within five years, according to Cayman Compass.
