Minesto has hired a UK-based manufacturer of power control systems MJR Power & Automation to supply it with the micro grid system that will be used for Deep Green tidal power plant.
Minesto will use the micro grid system (MGS) for the Holyhead Deep tidal power plant to handle the electricity produced by the plant, as it will not be connected to the grid.
With mainly ABB standardized components, MJR Power & Automation will design, manufacture and assembly an MGS that will host an electrical system, battery/energy storage and a control system.
The contract also includes services related to power system studies, Minesto said.
The companies have moved to the detailed design phase for the MGS that will be used to act as a virtual grid, which will, for example, set the voltage and frequency towards the kite. This is expected to enable Minesto to verify efficiency and ensure power quality, the company said.
Power produced by the power plant will be consumed by the MGS’ power system and the power system of the MGS buoy, the housing in which the MGS are placed, while the abundant power will be consumed in a resistor.
To be independent of any diesel generators, a battery storage will be used. It will store as much energy as is needed to keep the MGS and the buoy operating during periods when the power plant does not produce energy.
As reported earlier, the MGS buoy will be delivered by the Scottish Malin Group.
Minesto plans to deploy a 500kW Deep Green tidal power off the coast of Anglesey later this year.
