South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has been contracted to build two small-scale LNG carriers for KOGAS.

According to the company’s statement, the contract for the two 7,500 cubic meters LNG carriers is valued at US$100 million.

The two vessels equipped with the KC-1 cargo containment system will be used to transport LNG from the Tongyeong liquefied natural gas terminal to Jeju Island.

One of the two vessels will be capable of serving as an LNG bunkering vessels, SHI noted, adding that the delivery is scheduled for May and December 2019.

The shipbuilder said that the contract marks its entry into the small-scale LNG carrier and LNG bunkering markets.

“Increase in LNG demand in China and Southeast Asia is expected to call for demand for near-sea transport utilizing small-scale LNGCs,” SHI said.

With the two new orders, Samsung Heavy Industries has so far won $2.3 billion worth of orders since the start of the year, including three LNG carriers.
