India’s Reliance Power has been authorized by the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase to build a 718 MW gas-fired power plant in Bangladesh.
The company will use 110,000 mcf per day of regasified liquefied natural gas (LNG), Jameel Aleem , director for operation and mines at the state-run Petrobangla told Platts.
The Indian company has also entered the final stage of negotiations regarding the construction of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) near the Moheshkhali Island. Reliance Power is considering two options, either building the FSRU or contracting Petrobangla to supply feed gas to the proposed power plant via a pipeline.
Reliance Power will sign a 22-year agreement under which the Bangladesh Power Development Board will purchase electricity generated at the power plant.
Another state-run company, the Gas Transmission Company (GTCL) is set to build the gas pipeline from the Moheshkhali Island to Bakhrabad as well as a gas pipeline from Kutumbupur to Meghnaghat to supply regasified LNG to the power plant.
The country’s first FSRU is being developed by Excelerate Energy for Petrobangla near Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal.
The FSRU will be capable of delivering natural gas at a base regasification rate of 500 million standard cubic feet per day, with peaking capacity substantially in excess of this.
