To address the question of bunkering ability, one of the major stumbling blocks shipowners face when making their first moves in LNG as a marine fuel DNVGL is launching a new addition to its LNG business intelligence portal, LNGi.
The new addition, named LNG Fuel Finder, allows the “shipowners and charterers to register their interest in using LNG as a ship fuel ,” DNV GL’s statement reads noting it would connecting shipowners and charterers directly with LNG suppliers.
Many LNG suppliers find it difficult to aggregate sufficient demand to justify investment decisions, DNV GL.
Martin Wold , senior consultant environmental advisory at DNV GL – Maritime, said the tool provides shipowners with the opportunity to show the supply industry their interest in LNG bunkering, and “also helps to overcome the high entry barrier for new suppliers to the market.”
With the new tool, shipowners can inform LNG suppliers about their potential interest in bunkering LNG in specific locations, according to DNV GL.
The classification society expects the tool to have an impact on shipowners’ evaluation of the feasibility of using LNG as a fuel option.
DNV GL launched its LNGi portal in March last year to enable the maritime industry to keep track of the developments in the LNG sector.
