Weeks Marine, Inc. dredge, the B.E. Lindholm, has begun works on the Ocean County storm damage reduction project in Toms River.
The dredger arrived on Sunday, and after a day of preparations and setting up, started the Ortley Beach and Dune Replenishment project.
According to local media, it took six days for the 297-foot hopper dredge to arrive from Tampa, where it was receiving maintenance repairs after its last assignment in Florida.
Ortley Beach, which sustained catastrophic property damage from Superstorm Sandy, will over the next two weeks receive over 267,000 cubic yards of sand, creating an approximately 225-foot-wide beach.
However, contrary to what the contractor originally proposed; the project will start working toward the south first, so that there will be more working room to transport equipment to and from the staging area near the Seaside border.
The Township of Toms River reported that the closure of the beach will still be limited to 1,000 feet at a time, and sand ramps will be provided over the pipe where it crosses the open beach areas.
