Ship Sinks off Malaysia, Two Missing

Two seafarers are believed to be missing after a cargo ship sank in the Malacca Strait in the morning hours of June 14, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency informed.

As disclosed, the Indonesia-flagged KM Avatar sank some eleven nautical miles from Tanjung Kling.

Thirteen crew members were rescued by the vehicles carrier Undine which was in the vicinity at the time of the incident, the agency said, referring to a statement received by Marine Department Malaysia.

“There are two more people still missing believed to be the captain and a cook of the ship,” Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director- general, Datuk Zulkifili Abu Bakar said.

Search and rescue operations are underway despite bad weather and strong winds followed by big waves.

“The cause of the incident is still under investigation,” he added.
