Australian resource company, BHP Billiton, said Ken MacKenzie has been selected to succeed Jac Nasser as chairman, effective September 1, 2017.

Nasser is retiring from both his positions as chairman and non-executive director, BHP Billiton said.

MacKenzie joined the BHP board as a non-executive director in September 2016 and is a member of the board’s sustainability committee.

He spent 23 years at Amcor, a global packaging company, serving as managing director and CEO for 10 of those 23 years.

Senior independent director, Shriti Vadera , who led the formal succession process, said the board “undertook a rigorous search and assessment of potential external and internal candidates,” with the assistance of the international recruitment firm, Heidrick & Struggles.
