BAM has floated out the first of the five concrete gravity base foundations being constructed for EDF Blyth wind farm project off the Northumberland coast, UK.

The gravity base left the dry dock in Newcastle and was floated down the River Tyne to Port of Tyne. The base will have additional ballast added to it and will then be towed to Blyth for final installation.

BAM was awarded a contract in June 2016 by EDF Energy Renewables via SPV Blyth Offshore Demonstrator to design, fabricate and install the five foundations.

The foundation design will utilize ‘self-installing’ technology, which has been developed by two BAM companies, BAM Nuttall and BAM Infra. The design is being undertaken by BAM Infraconsult.

The project is a demonstration project to prove the viability of this approach to installing gravity base foundations in the offshore environment for future wind farms.

All fabrication will be carried out locally in Newcastle on the River Tyne and the project is due for completion during summer 2017.
