Japan’s biggest city gas supplier and LNG importer, Tokyo Gas and JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corp have cancelled a plan to build two additional natural gas-fired power units at their jointly operated Kawasaki power plant.
The two companies submitted the plan back in 2015 to add the two generators with a capacity of 550 megawatts each with a planned operation start in 2021.
The current two generators at the Kawasaki Natural Gas Power Generation site produce about 840 megawatts of electricity in total.
The duo said in a joint statement on Friday that they have decided to cancel the expansion plans due to a lack of economic feasibility amid growing competition after the liberalisation of Japan’s retail power market in April last year.
JXTG has a 51 percent stake in the joint venture while Tokyo Gas’ share is 49 percent.
