Japan’s biggest city gas supplier, Tokyo Gas, is looking into the option of supplying liquefied natural gas to remote islands in Southeast Asia.
The company intends to construct a network of smaller LNG storage facilities as well as LNG-fueled power-generation facilities that would be supplied by small-scale LNG vessels.
According to a report by Nikkei, Tokyo gas has already set the wheels in motion with a feasibility study in the Philippines.
Investment in each of the facilities would be in the tens of millions of dollars. The company has also been given support by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry during the study period that would last through the spring of 2018.
The Philippines already have already started construction of LNG receiving terminals to secure supply as its domestic production is set to stop in 2022-2023.
Tokyo Gas aims to have its storage facilities ready by the time these import terminals start up, and also to expand its network in other countries.
