Japan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports dropped by 1.3 percent in June year-on-year, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.
The world’s largest buyer of the chilled fuel imported 6.18 million mt of LNG in June as compared to 6.26 million mt in the same month the year before.
On the other hand, Japan’s coal imports for power generation rose 20.2 percent to 10.22 million mt, the data showed.
This is Japan’s first monthly decline in LNG imports after posting a rise for four straight months.
Japan paid about $2.64 billion for LNG imports in June, a rise of almost 44 percent when compared to the same month in 2016.
To remind, Japan’s average price of spot LNG arriving during June was at $5.6 per mmBtu, reaching a 10-month low .
On a yearly comparison, the spot LNG price rose 24.4 percent.
