Japan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports rose by 3.6 percent in July year-on-year, according to the provisional data released by the country’s Ministry of Finance.
The world’s largest buyer of the chilled fuel imported 6.82 million mt of LNG last month as compared to 6.58 million mt in July 2016.
Japan in June reported a decline in monthly LNG imports after posting a rise for four straight months.
Japan paid about $3 billion for LNG imports in July, a rise of almost 47 percent when compared to the same month in 2016.
The country’s coal imports for power generation also rose in July by 13.6 percent to 10.59 million mt, the data showed.
To remind, the average price of spot LNG imported into Japan that was contracted in July was at $5.6 per mmBtu, reaching a 14-month low.
The arrival-based price was at $5.6 per mmBtu, the same as the previous month that was the lowest since August 2016, METI data showed.
