The first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the United States is being unloaded at the Lithuanian import terminal in the port of Klaipeda.

The cargo was delivered aboard the Clean Ocean carrier for Lithuania’s natural gas trading company Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG export facility.

Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas agreed the delivery of the first cargo to one of the Baltic States in June.

Once the chilled fuel is unloaded to the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Independence, serving as Lithuania’s import terminal operated by Klaipedos Nafta, the natural gas will be injected into the national gas transportation system during the middle of the week.

According to a statement by Lietuvos Energija, Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas’ parent company, some of the gas will be stored in the Inčukalns underground gas storage facility in order to be supplied to clients in Latvia.

The unloading of the cargo further increases the energy independence of Lithuania and the whole region, Žygimantas Vaičiūnas , the Lithuanian minister of energy said when speaking of the delivery.
