Bergen-based Cryo Shipping set up seaborne LNG transportation services for the northernmost counties in Norway, as it aims to solve challenges associated with liquefied natural gas infrastructure and logistics.
The company said it aims to make LNG available for industry and natural gas-fueled ships in counties of Nordland, Troms and Finmark.
So far, the distribution of LNG in the counties has been possible only by land transport, delivering small volumes of the chilled fuel by trucks and tank containers.
In addition, Cryo Shipping, that is planning to increase freight carried at sea has been awarded a €1 million ($1.2 million) from the Norwegian Coastal Administration to establish the LNG trade lane.
The company notes that the lack of customized logistics and infrastructure solutions have so far resulted in logistics expenses for LNG consumers, that are seen as a barrier to the implementation of liquefied natural gas as fuel for the industry and shipping.
Speaking of the transportation services concept, Cryo Shipping’s managing director Nicholai H. Olsen , said the company is working to “commercialize a unique concept that can supply LNG to the land-based industry as well as bunkering ships.”
