The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, has partnered with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Department of Conservation to examine issues leading to sedimentation, flooding, log jams and impacts to habitat in the Lower Grand River watershed.
The Grand River Basin Feasibility Study evaluates alternatives to address recognized problems in the Lower Grand River watershed. Loss of aquatic and wetland habitats as well as losses impacting private lands and infrastructure result in bank erosion, channel instability, log jams, and stream flow issues, said USACE.
“Our team, comprised of multiple state and federal agencies, is hopeful to identify real on-the-ground cost-effective solutions through this study to address the problems in this area. The sedimentation and log jams cause unprecedented problems and wreak havoc on public and private lands. We hope to find a solution and justify a need for funding to fix these issues,” said Kaely Megaro, USACE project manager for the study.
USACE will host public meetings to provide information and solicit input on this study. The meetings will be in an open house format with informational stations and agency staff available to answer questions.
