Edinburgh-based engineering consultancy QED Naval has completed the factory acceptance tests on its Subhub tidal platform named Kraken.
The tests included lifting Kraken’s main hull off the cradle and supporting structure onto its main leg structure that fully supports the platform’s weight.
Also, the tests which pressurized each of the ballast tanks were completed successfully along with non-destructive tests, while the welding plans have been approved, QED Naval said.
Following the conclusion of tests, QED Naval outfitted the internal sections of the Subhub platform, the consultancy informed.
QED Naval is currently commissioning and testing all the ballast and instrumentation of the Kraken, which is awaiting painting set for completion in early October.
Kraken platform, designed to commission, test, transport, install, and secure a mini array of wave and tidal turbines to the seabed, is planned for launch early in 2018, QED Naval said.
It has been fabricated by the engineering company Cimpina, and the trials will be conducted at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).
