Orca ESS from Corvus Energy has been selected to provide battery power to two Havila offshore platform supply vessels chartered by Statoil.

Corvus Energy said on Monday that it would supply a lithium-ion-based energy storage systems (ESS) for two platform supply vessels (PSVs) set to be retrofitted with hybrid power systems.

According to the company, the Orca Energy ESS will supply electrical power to each PSVs propulsion system electrical network to enable environmentally-friendly operations.

The two Havila-owned vessels are part of a larger group of PSVs that were awarded long-term charter contracts by Statoil, under the condition that they would convert to hybrid power operations using batteries.

The 94-meter Havila Foresight and the 93-meter Havila Charisma will each be fitted with a 1000kWh Orca Energy ESS, supported in part by the NOx fund. So far, Corvus has been awarded contracts for hybrid power retrofitting on six vessels under charter by Statoil.

“Statoil is focusing on reducing emissions from their logistics activities and has mandated that all new charters shall utilize energy storage systems during all aspects of the PSV’s operation, particularly during dynamic positioning and harbor operations where fuel consumption and emissions will be significantly reduced,” the company said.

Roger Rosvold , sales manager of Corvus Energy, added: “Corvus is proud to be part of Statoil’s commitment to the environment and their goal of becoming a leader in cleaner oil & gas production as they leverage renewable energy technologies such as the Orca ESS.”
