The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR)have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which should develop joint training and technical programmes for knowledge transfer and research collaboration around areas of marine science affecting local and global communities.

Both the NOC and VIGMR recognize the important role of marine science in the sustainable use of clean energy, minerals and other resources, protecting people and property from natural disasters, wealth creation, environmental protection, and enhancement of the quality of life.

Kevin Forshaw , NOC Associate Director of Enterprise and Innovation, signed the MoU on behalf of the NOC and said, “The NOC is committed to forging mutually beneficial international partnerships with other world-leading institutes. We look forward to building a strong relationship with Vietnam and the VIGMR for the benefit of the oceans and society.”

The signing took place after a three day workshop, hosted by the VIGMR in Hanoi, where the specific areas of interest for assistance in multidisciplinary research where discussed. The workshops were attended by researchers from the NOC (UK), the British Geological Survey (UK), Heriot-Watt University (UK), VIGMR (Vietnam) and other local partners with interests in marine science and technology.

Collaboration will focus on both marine technologies and expertise, as well as scientific knowledge on coastal protection, water quality and sustainable operations. Impacts from this collaborative multidisciplinary research will address some of Vietnam’s current marine challenges including management of marine resources and marine pollution.
